Who to Trust
None of us can be experts in all fields, and none of us can know
everything. We must decide who we are going to trust.
We'll tell you straight up: don't trust us. Trust the experts in
the fields we address. Facts-Matter.info pulls together information
from sources we trust, but we are not necessarily the experts in
these fields, either. Please see the experts.
Ultimately, you must apply critical thinking skills. Be aware that
there are people who are devoted to knowledge-based professions and
people who have significant vested interests.
The Sort of People We Trust
- Teachers and University Professions
- Scientists when talking about their chosen field
- Reporters from centrist news organizations
Everyone comes with personal bias, but people in these professions are
devoted to truth as best as they can. Please see the full critical thinking
pages for longer discussion.
The Sort We Take with a Grain of Salt
- Company executives
- Politicians of any party
- Anyone with a vested interest in their position
- Anyone espousing their views as so-called facts with no sources
- Random people on the internet
The people in this list may, from time to time, tell the truth. But
they have clear, vested interest in their position. If a politician tells you
something, that doesn't mean he's lying. But we feel it is critical to find other
sources.
When you're in the position of deciding who to trust, consider the vested interest.
Politicians and company execs always have a vested interest.
Individual teachers, professors, scientists, or reporters may also have their
own bias, and so a single teacher or scientist may not be trusted, but the
profession as a whole can be trusted ahead of politicians and company executives.
